How to be " The Cat's Meow" for our Feline Patients
One of the hardest parts of our job as veterinary nurses or technicians is to care for cats that do not want to be cared for. The cat patient may flee, hiss, swat, or try to bite us, leading us to add in heavier restraint for the feline to receive the treatment that it needs. This leads to subpar care for the cat, reluctance from the owner to heed recommendations, and frustration and possible injury for the veterinary staff. It does not have to be that way; and change starts with us. In this lecture, we will discuss what we can do to make cats more comfortable in the veterinary setting to help their physical and mental wellbeing, as well as our own.
Don't Leave Me! Helping Dogs with Separation Anxiety
Living with a dog with separation anxiety can feel like being a prisoner in your own home. It’s hard to leave when it’s known that the dog will feel anxious, which is often presented as panting, pacing, destruction, and elimination in the home. This condition, like many other behavior issues in dogs, is a quality of life issue for the owner as well as the pet. Veterinary professionals are the ideal choice to help owners and their pets deal with separation anxiety, especially since medications are warranted in many cases. In this talk, we are going to discuss what separation anxiety is, ways to try to prevent and treat it, and make a plan to give dogs owners their life back.

Tiffany Johnson
RVT, KPA CTP, Family PawsTM Licensed Educator
Growing up on a farm and showing animals in 4h was what sparked my interest in pursuing a future as a technician. I graduated from the veterinary technology program at Brown Mackie college in 2015. My technician career started at a mixed animal practice in Ohio where I had the opportunity to work with both large and small animals. In 2018, I was introduced to the world of behavior and jumped right in. I am currently a technician at The Behavior Clinic in Ohio, and am working towards the goal of becoming a veterinary technician specialist in behavior. I am Fear Free Elite Certified, along with being a Certified Training Partner with Karen Pryor Academy, and a member of the Fear Free Speakers Bureau. I also recently went through the Family Pawsprogram and am a licensed Family Paws Parent Educator. I live in Cleveland with my husband and our beagle, Gunner. Gunner was my partner when I went through the Karen Pryor Academy course, and he continues to teach me something new every day when it comes to behavior. I also enjoy reading in my free time, hiking through the Metroparks, and am a huge Harry Potter fan!
